LoRaWAN Coverage & The People’s Network

Long battery life, no SIM costs – and a network you can help build.

Why LoRaWAN Coverage Can Vary

LoRaWAN works differently from mobile networks. Instead of relying on big phone masts, coverage is created by thousands of small gateways installed by:

👨‍🌾 Farmers

🏢 Small businesses

🏚️ Homes & workshops

🛰️ Community members

This people-powered network keeps costs low, removes SIM cards, and enables long battery life — but it also means some rural areas can have gaps.

Check LoRaWAN Coverage in Your Area

The Helium IoT Network is powered by thousands of community-run LoRaWAN gateways across the UK.
Coverage varies by location — just like any wireless network — and continues to grow every month.

You can view nearby gateway locations using the official Helium IoT map:

This gives a good general idea of network presence in your area.

Improve Coverage With a Self-Installed LoRaWAN Gateway

Provided by our community partner — not supplied or guaranteed by SatTrack

If you live in an area with weak or inconsistent Helium IoT coverage, you can often fix the issue with a small LoRaWAN gateway installed at your home, farm, workshop or business.

These gateways act like “mini masts” — they listen for tracker signals and forward them to the network. Even just onewell-placed gateway can dramatically improve coverage across your local area.

This is especially useful for:

✔  Remote farms
✔  Machinery stored in steel barns
✔  Rural yards
✔  Areas with no nearby hotspots
✔  Anyone wanting to support “The People’s Network”

How It Works

  • You install a small LoRaWAN gateway at your home, farm or business — usually on an outside wall or roofline for the best signal.

  • The gateway listens for your tracker, even if you're in a weak coverage area. Typical coverage: 2-10 km depending on terrain, height and obstructions.

  • Your tracker sends its locations through your gateway, giving you reliable tracking where coverage was previously poor

  • Your gateway also helps the wider Helium IoT network, improving coverage for your area and supporting other users.

These items are not sold or provided by SatTrack, and supply is limited. Availability, suitability and installation conditions vary by location. Equipment is supplied for self-installation only.
